Kelly NicholaidesThe facility at 390 Murray Hill Parkway, was the former Nets basketball practice facility, which has been expanded from 53,000 square feet to approximately 83,200.' For 97 years, we existed as the Y without walls, operating out of offices in North Arlington and East Rutherford and serving communities in 50 locations, at schools, community centers, and senior centers,' said Jane Egan, president and CEO of the Meadowlands YMCA. 'But we were maxed out on what programming we could provide.'
Details include modern lighting and lots of windows for natural light in every room. There is a mix of soft and rich colors throughout the facility that features two NB-sized basketball courts, 15,000 square feet of luxury line exercise equipment in the fitness center, the Mara Center for Early Childhood Learning, a sauna, steam room, locker rooms and classroom space.' This is not our fathers' Y. It's the Y of today and the future. It's a lot more than a gym and swim,' said Egan.
Kelly NicholaidesIt offers more than 400 programs for health, fitness and lifestyle catering to all ages and levels as well as youth enrichment classes, academic readiness, cooking, dance, art, sports, music, SAT and STEM classes, gymnastics, adults wellness classes, performance training, senior enrichment programs, adult leagues, and training courses such as self defense, CPR and First Aid.' These programs include teaching kids to be better people, how to swim, and how to create art and music,' Egan said, highlighting the Y's goal of promoting healthy living as well as social responsibility.Board of Directors member Ron Simoncini said programming will continue in communities, but the Y will focus on its new digs.' We needed a lot of determination, money and luck to get this space. We always had the determination,' he said. 'We got lucky because two people associated with the NY Giants used their philanthropy and provided our first significant gift.' The design is done in a way that there's a continuity in the relationship of the spaces, noted Kurt Vierheilig, senior designer at DMR Architects. 'Social spaces, for example, play off each other, flow into each other. You want that energy and appeal.
What happened to rita coolidge. The dynamic works on the whole. This is not a gym. It's an extension of the community,' Vierheilig said.
