This seems to be a question I hear and see a lot throughout the ATV & UTV community. Although some people may be mud tire experts, some people are still searching for answers. Ever seen a tire on an ATV and wanted to know more information but didn't want to approach the owner & look stupid? Well look no further. Here at 4 Wheel Monsters we have taken the time to put together a 'Mud Tire Glossary' with a picture & brief description of the most popular mud tires on the market. We hope you can use this guide to find a tire you might be looking for, or maybe to find additional info on a tire you might be thinking about purchasing.
The High Lifter Outlaw tire is the Mud tire that started it all. The first ATV tire designed strictly for mud riding, the Outlaw is a staple in the Mud Community. The 6 ply construction makes for a durable tire while being lighter than most mud tires on the market. The tread design features a rounded tip, paddle-like lug and is a full 1-1/4' deep for improved traction. The cupped lugs help propel the ATV forward as opposed to cutting through the mud and digging a hole like some mud tires do. The 'Outlaw' design also puts more rubber on the ground for longer tire life, and resistance to tread tears and tip wear. The design includes a large and unrestricted space between the lugs for superior self-cleaning capabilities.
The High Lifter Outlaw 2 is a re-designed version of the original Outlaw tire above. High Lifter took its best tire and put it on steroids to create the newest tire in their line of ATV tires.

With a tweaked lug pattern that wraps the lugs all the way to the rim, the Outlaw 2 is an improved version of the original. The Outlaw 2 has some great features like f ull side wall tread to increase traction in deep ruts, scooped treads to maximize pulling, digging and paddling through deep mud and water, & a flatter profile for a smoother ride on hard surfaces. The Outlaw 2 has an impressive 1-5/8' tread depth in the center while boasting a 2-3/4' tread depth at the shoulder. Throw all these features in & the result is a rugged mud tire that continuously pulls and cleans with every revolution. SuperATV was founded in 2003 and has grown to be a staple in the ATV industry mainly because of their amazing mud tires. The first SuperATV tire released was the Terminator and it hit the industry by storm.
The Terminator has a tread style like no other tire available. Terminators 6 ply construction allows it to be durable while also being light weight. With its angled tread design, the tire diverts mud away for improved traction. Terminators boast an incredible 2' tread depth. The unique tread design allows amazing clean-out while keeping a smooth ride on hard surfaces. After the success of their first tire, SuperATV designed and released a second tire: The Intimidator.
Boasting an all new meaty tread design the intimidator looks tough & performs. Keeping the 6 ply construction the Intimidator is durable, but a little heavier than the Terminator due to the oversized lugs. The Intimidator also has a 2' tread depth but has better sidewall grab. SuperATV kept clean-out in mind when designing & the Intimidator cleans out great.
Stepping the bar up, the Intimidator is one of the only ATV/UTV tires on the market that is offered in a 40' size. Yes, 40 inches. Over the last year, the industry has seen a rise in BKT agricultural tires installed on ATV/UTV's.
Jumping at the opportunity to offer something similar, yet better, SuperATV released the Assassinator. With deep lugs, extreme grip, and a narrow profile, the Assassinator Tire can get you through the thickest and slickest of mud. Utilizing the same technology as the Terminator Tire, the Assassinator has a self-cleaning lug that sheds the unwanted weight of carrying around built up mud. Like other SuperATV tires the Assassinator maintains a smooth ride on hard surfaces. The Assassinator is the other SuperATV tire offered in a 40 inch size. The Gorilla-Axle Silverback tire has been around and is definitely trail proven.
One of the original ATV mud tires, the Silverback has a unique look & design all its own. Like most, the Silverback is 6-ply rated & can handle abuse. The Silverback design allows for superior clean-out, but does compromise the smoothness of the ride on hard surfaces.
The Silverback has lugs that wrap around the tire all the way to the rim for side traction while also helping to protect your rims from damage. Tread Depth varies depending on the size tire, but the 32' silverback has an incredible 2.5' of tread depth for that deep mud! The Silverback MT2 is the next generation tire to the Silverback with improvements in lug design. Gorilla-Axle successfully combined the Pulling Power of the original Silverback with the smooth ride of an All Terrain.
In doing so, they were able to maintain the Silverbacks aggressive mud characteristics such as clean out, superior side wall traction for deep ruts and unmatched traction in all types of mud. To achieve this unparalleled combination, Gorilla-Axle collaborated with Interco Tire who has nearly 50 years in the development of offroad tires and gave it the “Silverback Touch”. This collaboration has produced one of the most aggressive, smoothest riding, true mud tire on the market today. Hitting the market in early 2015, the Juggernaut is by far the most aggressive ATV mud tire yet. The Juggernaut is designed & sold by Power Toys of Texas in Conroe, TX. With an INSANE 3' lug depth, the Juggernaut is designed to crush through mud or any terrain for that matter. The design is similar to an agricultural style tire, yet it has beefy side lugs like no tractor tire known to man. It has over 1 inch deep lugs.
ON THE SIDEWALL! Its clear the Juggernaut was designed for one thing: MUD. But don't let the aggressive looks fool you, the Juggernaut still manages to keep a great, smooth ride on hard surfaces. The Superior Traction Tire hit the market in late 2014 and made serious waves. The first tire of its kind (Extremely deep, aggressive lugs), there was a serious buzz about these tires. Superior Traction Tires have a 6-ply rating and can handle tough trails. The tread design is very similar to the Juggernaut above, but the ST Tire does not have any sidewall lug.
Even with the aggressive tread, the design allows for a smooth ride. Superior Traction does recommend running tubes in all their tires, though all other tires on this list do not.
