Well I played Game Dev Story and I loved it but now I moved to Pocket Academy. However, I have absolutely no idea on what I should be focusing on.

Game Dev Story is a pretty linear process, but Pocket is a bit more difficult.What should I be focusing on during my first year? What are some tips on what buildings I should use, and how do I place them?. While the buildings are important for the generation of resources, the main focus should be on giving special classes to the students to improve their performance. That will help with the production of income, as increased performance means that more students are interested in attending your school.Buildings - one of each should suffice. You'll want to try and arrange them so that you get the special 'spots' which add bonuses and sometimes unlock things. Also make sure to have a few patches for veggies, as well as a couple of animal pens. These generate a small amount of money but also help with resources.Finally, don't stress too much.
